This coming Thursday, October 4th, marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of sputnik. If any of the things that 50 years of sci-fi has taught us to expect actually comes true (and quite a few of those things already have come true), then we have sputnik to thank for it.

Via boingboing.net: Stephen Hawking (of A Brief History of Time fame) has co-written, along with his daughter and the French physicist Christophe Galfard, a kid’s sci-fi book. George’s Secret Key to the Universe is sci-fi actually grounded in science and meant for kids to grasp. This means I may actually understand it.
